Kathmandu, 22 January 2026 – The Nepal government has started a special Cyber Police Nepal unit to stop false news on social media. This comes before the House of Representatives election on 5 March 2026.
The unit is run by the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau. A monitoring office has been set up in Bhotahity, Kathmandu. It will track fake posts, deepfakes, and harmful content online.
The Election Commission is also using software to check social media activity during elections. Police may take legal action against anyone spreading false or harmful information.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal said the government will work with internet and phone providers to stop fake news quickly. People spreading criminal content online could be arrested.
Officials say this step by Cyber Police Nepal will help voters get correct information and keep social media safe during the elections.
