Kathmandu: It has been confirmed that the appointment of the 18th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, agreed upon by the top leaders of the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML parties, will be finalized by Friday. According to high-level sources at Baluwatar, a Cabinet meeting is likely to be held this evening or tomorrow to conclude the long-delayed appointment process.
A source close to the Prime Minister said, “The Governor’s appointment will probably be finalized today; if not, it will definitely happen by Friday.”
Earlier, after the Supreme Court ordered not to enforce the age limit criteria for the Governor, the controversy over Executive Director Dr. Gunakar Bhatt’s eligibility was considered resolved. Following the court’s order, the government has been preparing to appoint Dr. Bhatt as Governor.
For this purpose, the government has already appointed former Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari to the vacant member position of the Governor Recommendation Committee. This decision has also become a subject of legal dispute.
According to high-level sources, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba met with Law Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya and Secretary Uday Raj Sapkota at his residence in Budhanilkantha on Thursday to seek advice on the legal aspects of the Governor appointment.
Meanwhile, some groups including Acting Governor Dr. Nilam Dhungana are preparing to file a lawsuit in court, claiming Dr. Bhatt’s appointment is illegal. Sources say that if the government makes a decision against the constitution, it will be the judiciary’s responsibility to correct it.
It is noteworthy that the issue regarding the educational qualifications of retired Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari remains unresolved. Some fear that if a case is filed against Dr. Bhatt, the ruling parties may adopt a strategy similar to Adhikari’s case to delay the process.
