Kathmandu, Nepal – Jan 20, 2026: The government is purchasing power at a rate of ₹6.95 per unit from India. This is being done under a contract with the Power Trading Corporation of India (PTC). This news will bring joy to the Nepali citizens as it will increase the power supply in Nepal during the winter season. This marks the beginning of official Nepal electricity import from India to address seasonal spikes in peak demand.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) said Nepal electricity import from India began on January 13, 2026. It said that the electricity imports will help meet the demand, as well as cut power cuts in households and businesses.

Key Points

  • Rate: ₹6.95 per unit, including transmission charges and line losses.
  • Start date: January 13, 2026.
  • Purpose: To cover the shortfall in electricity during the dry season through the Nepal electricity import from India.

Why It Matters

Nepal makes most of its electricity from rivers. In the rainy season, there is enough power, but in winter, water levels drop, and plants produce less energy. Importing electricity from India fills this gap and stops power cuts.

NEA says this deal was made after checking all options. The deal gives Nepal stable power at a known price for the winter months. The Nepal electricity import from India ensures that homes as well as other businesses are well supplied with electricity.

Nepal generally exports power during the rainy season and imports power during winter. This ensures that there are no power outages in any dwelling or business.
