Kathmandu, March 19: Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa has resigned from his party position after losing the House of Representatives election held on March 5.
Thapa was earlier elected from Kathmandu-4. This time, he contested from Sarlahi-4. He was defeated by Dr Amaresh Kumar Singh of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
After the election results, Thapa submitted his resignation to Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
In the election, the RSP performed strongly. The Nepali Congress won a total of 38 seats. This includes 18 seats from the first-past-the-post system and 20 from proportional representation.
After the defeat, Thapa faced pressure from inside the party. Some leaders asked him to stay in his position. However, he decided to step down.
Thapa was earlier elected as party president in a special general convention before the elections.
His resignation will now be discussed in the central working committee meeting on Friday. The party will take a final decision then.
