Kathmandu — The appointment of Dr. Gunakar Bhatt as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank has hit a snag after his resignation was not accepted, leading the Nepali Congress to shift its focus toward an alternative candidate. Following advice from the Prime Minister, Congress is signaling the possibility of proposing a new name instead of Dr. Bhatt.
At a party leadership meeting held Friday at Deuba’s residence, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli presented several options for the governor post. Many leaders responded positively to the name of Gyanendra Dhungana, and even Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba showed quiet support for the first time.
According to sources, many believe that appointing Gyanendra Dhungana as governor could restore the dignity, chain of command, and improve monetary policy at the central bank. Dhungana, who enjoys public support, is also popular among stock market investors.
Analysts say that if Dhungana becomes governor, it could boost confidence in the capital market and have a positive impact on the economy.
