Kathmandu, March 25, 2026: The US dollar hits new high against the Nepali rupee. According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the selling rate was Rs. 150.67 on Tuesday, the highest recorded so far. For Wednesday, the rate has been slightly lowered to Rs. 150.49.
In recent weeks, the Nepali rupee has been getting weaker compared to the US dollar. Earlier, on March 10, the exchange rate was around Rs. 148.03. After this point, the dollar has been increasing steadily and has now reached a new record, showing how the US dollar hits new high against Nepali rupee trend is continuing.
One of the main reasons for this change is the global economic situation. The Federal Reserve has recently made a decision not to increase interest rates, which has contributed to the strengthening of the dollar. Also, the value of the Indian Rupee has decreased. Since the Nepali rupee is linked to the Indian rupee, it has also fallen in value.
A stronger US dollar has both good and bad effects on Nepal.
On the positive side, the inflow of remittances will increase. Nepali citizens working outside the country will send more money home as they get more rupees in exchange, especially when the US dollar hits new high against Nepali rupee.
However, there are a number of negative effects as well. The cost of imports will rise, which may cause prices to rise in the market. In addition, the cost of foreign loans for the country will rise, as the loans are mostly taken in US dollars.
Moreover, the individuals who go outside the country for further study, medical treatment, or travel will have to spend more money.
The rise of the US dollar is good for remittances and foreign income; however, the rise may cause more pressure on the economy if the dollar rises even more.
