BYD Robot-Run Factory in China: EV Built in Under One Minute with 98% Automation

The BYD robot-run factory company claims that its factory in Zhengzhou, China, can manufacture an electric car within one minute using automated robots and intelligent machinery.

This BYD robot-run factory began operations in 2021 and has since grown to be among BYD’s largest manufacturing sites for electric cars. The site spans 10.67 square kilometres and manufactures electric cars and other crucial automobile components.

BYD claims that the factory operates with 98% automation. The jobs are done by robots, including welding, painting, assembling, and quality control. Approximately 1,500 robots are deployed for welding.

When Nepalese journalists visited the plant, BYD Asia Pacific General Manager Liu Xueliang stated that the company has dramatically increased its production capacity with the help of robots.

As Nepali journalists were visiting the factory, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific, Liu Xueliang, revealed that the company had significantly boosted its productivity through automation.

“A car body can be produced in less than a minute,” Mr. Liu added.

In addition, he noted that the factory manufactures one battery cell within three seconds.

Alongside cars, the BYD robot-run factory also produces Blade batteries, motors, steering, seating, lighting, and other essential parts. BYD claims that the facility is equipped with an integrated manufacturing line capable of producing EVs from beginning to end.

BYD robot-run factory also demonstrated its flash charging system in Shenzhen. As per BYD, it is possible for a car to be charged by up to 97 percent within nine minutes. In addition, a charge of nine minutes gives a driving range of 988 kilometers.

BYD is also growing its charging infrastructure in China. According to the company, there are 4,239 charging stations currently, but by the end of 2026, it wants to bring the total number up to 20,000.

According to Liu, Nepal is becoming an important market for BYD. Liu appreciated Nepal’s distributor Cimex for contributing to BYD’s expansion in Nepal.

He noted that when he first came to Nepal about 10 years back, the country had power shortages. But he was surprised with the future plans of the country along with its increasing interest in electric vehicles.

BYD claims that it has been working on developing EV technology for the past 20 years, and now it has become one of the world’s top manufacturers of electric vehicles.
