Kathmandu, May 1, 2026 — Nepal Stock Exchange Limited (NEPSE) closed today because the government of Nepal has observed a national public holiday for Buddha Jayanti and International Labor Day.
With the implementation of the holiday, all the stock market operations, including trade and settlement, have been halted. According to NEPSE, normal trading will be resumed starting Sunday (21st Baishakh, 2083) at 11:00 AM.
Buddha Jayanti, also referred to as Buddha Purnima, celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of enlightenment, or Nirvana, of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama. It is a day when people in Nepal pay homage to him by praying, meditating, and visiting monasteries.
However, on the other hand, International Labor Day is celebrated worldwide on May 1st in order to appreciate the role of laborers and their constant struggle for securing fair pay, good working conditions, and workers’ rights.
Closing of NEPSE for public holidays is something that happens every now and then, and there is nothing unusual about it. The trading operations are expected to resume as soon as the market opens on the next day.
